Dr. Whitfield joined the Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center division of Southeastern Orthopedic Specialists in 1980. He is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine after which he completed a 6 year residency. The last 4 years were spent at the Duke University Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and was certified in 1981. His society memberships include the Southern Orthopedic Association, the Piedmont Orthopedic Society, and the Guilford County Medical Society. He has staff privileges at the Moses Cone Health System (Wesley Long and Moses Cone) and the Health South Surgical Center.
Dr. Whitfield has a broad based orthopedic practice with a focus on shoulder, hip and knee surgery maintining a current interest in contemporary treatment. he has been honored with the “Top Doctors in America” designation for 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. In the past few years he has been involved in clinical research with arthritis and with improving methods in treating post-operative thrombophlebitis.
He resides in Greensboro with his wife of 31 years. His two older sons are presently pursuing graduate degrees; his youngest attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
